Fisherman Baldur (newcomer Egor Venned) lives a simple life with his widowed mother in an insular Christian community on the Faroe Islands—until rugged Danish whaler Helge ( Game of Thrones 's Pilou Asbæk) washes up on shore. Charming and worldly, Helge offers Baldur a chance at a more fulfilling existence. Furtive glances soon blossom into a full-blown romance as touching as it is transient, as Baldur's sense of duty and the secrecy around his same-sex desire keep him from joining Helge on his next expedition. After a tragic accident makes their reunion even more impossible than it already had seemed, Baldur offers up his own blood in exchange for his beloved's return. Steeped in Gothic conceptions of love, mortality, and longing, No Rest for the Wicked is a beautiful yet tragic 19th-century vampire romance in a captivating folk horror setting. Directed by Kasper Kalle. Danish, Faroese language. 103 minutes. Part of Cinema/Chicago After Dark and OutLook programs at the 61st Chicago International Film Festival.
