A 1928 silent film directed by Josef von Sternberg, presented by the Chicago Film Society. A visual feast set almost entirely among the titular docks. He rescues a drowning suicidal prostitute Mae (Betty Compson) and finds himself mysteriously softened by her fragile charm. Features live musical accompaniment by Whitney Johnson. Preceded by "New York Near Sleep for Saskia" (Peter Hutton, 1972) – 10 min – 16mm.
