John Carpenter's THE THING may be the best sci-fi action horror movie ever made. Adapted from the same short story that inspired Howard Hawks' 1951 classic THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, the film is pure Carpenter in its realization. Characteristically visceral and spare, the action of this disturbing masterpiece takes place at an isolated Antarctic research station whose inhabitants are being hunted one by one by an unseen predator. Legendary for its groundbreaking, gory practical effects, the film's suffocating atmosphere is driven by Ennio Morricone's minimalist, pulsating synth score deepening the movie's sense of absolute loneliness and dread. 1982, John Carpenter, USA, 109 mins.
